Sabancı University Gender and Women's Studies Forum

Established in March 2010, Sabancı University Gender and Women’s Studies Forum (The Gender Forum, for short), brings together faculty, administrators and students interested in gender and women’s studies to share research and other related activities on women and gender, to design and carry out new collaborative projects, and to organize public events on and off campus that contribute to key debates on gender and sexuality. Gender and education, gender in science and academia, gender and sexuality, and gender-based violence constitute the core areas of Gender Forum activities. Among the ongoing projects are the Purple Certificate Program (which aims to develop gender awareness among high school teachers from different parts of Turkey), the Dicle Koğacıoğlu Essay  Award (for articles on gender written by graduate students), the Gender Forum Speaker Series (which has hosted renowned international scholars, such as Kathy Davis, Richa Nagar, Andrea Petö, and Valerie Miner, as well as Turkish scholars, filmmakers, policy-makers, and politicians), Adult Education Modules (Creative Writing and Gender Awareness, Women in Literature, Femininity and Masculinity in the Works of Male Writers, “Queer” in Literature), as well as collaborative projects on women’s and girls’ empowerment, gender-equality in business practices, and gender awareness work in prisons.
